CLOSE to 60,000 Leaving Cert students will receive their exam results today with results broadly in line with previous years.

A new fast-tracked process will see college applicants receive offers before the end of the week.

Changes also mean those who appeal their grades will receive their final results three weeks earlier than normal.

This follows a High Court ruling last year in favour of a student who argued she should have been able to start her course when she secured enough points after appealing her results.

Mr Justice Richard Humphreys ruled that the current system was highly unfair to students and could not be repeated.

Students will be able to collect results in person today from their school or online at examinations.ie.

There is expected to be a slight increase in the proportion achieving the top grade in `Ard level' Irish, as well as rises in history and French.

Maths (55,094), English (54,694) and Irish (48,334) have attracted the greatest number of entries.

There has been a slight increase in the candidature for the non-curricular EU languages this year - 1,679 against 1,461 in 2018. Polish (780), Romanian (340) and Lithuanian (177) had the most entries among these subjects.
