AN anti-gold mine campaigner from Co Tyrone has been charged with resisting a police officer and obstructing a road.

Cormac McAleer (68) was arrested in January following an incident near Greencastle, Co Tyrone.

Mr McAleer, of Crockanboy Road, Creggan, did not attend the brief hearing at Omagh Magistrates Court yesterday.

None of the details were outlined in court yesterday but Mr McAleer, who is chairman of the Save Our Sperrins group, was arrested on January 23 for obstructing a highway and resisting police following an incident at the proposed mining site in Greencastle.

It is understood his car met a waste lorry coming from the proposed mine site and neither vehicle would move back on a narrow country road.

He was remanded on bail until August 13.
