SINN Féin has condemned an attack on a republican memorial in north Belfast.

The party said the memorial at Herbert Street in Ardoyne was targeted with paint on Saturday night.

Sinn Féin councillor Ryan Murphy described it as a "sectarian attack".

"The memorial - including the names of the area’s patriot dead - was attacked with paint during the night," he said.

"This attack is outrageous and does nothing other than cause distress for the family and friends whose loved ones are named on the memorial.

"I would like to commend local republicans and residents who speedily repaired the memorial this morning.

"If anyone has any information about those responsible for this vile attack I would urge them to bring it forward to the police."
