The coastguard took several hours to rescue the man, who fell from a cliff path down a steep slope on Friday evening while using his motorised wheelchair.

Ahead of the rescue, coastguard and fire crews were able to secure the man, who was still in his wheelchair, to prevent him from sliding onto rocks.

A coastguard spokesman said a “delicate rescue operation” took place to recover the man “from his precarious perch”.

He said the operation was “made more challenging by the 140kg weight of the wheelchair, in which the man was still entangled”.

The man was treated by ambulance staff at the scene and was not injured. His wheelchair was recovered in working order.
