AS a young boy, Rory McIlroy used to chip shots into his parents' washing machine and even appeared on television to show off his talents.

And in a quirky nod to his past, the Co Down golfer was spotted at Royal Portrush paying homage to his golfing roots.

The Holywood-born sports star proudly donned a blue polo shirt featuring a washing machine logo for Tuesday's practice round of The Open.

And if there were any fears that McIlroy's multi-million sponsorship deal with Nike was under threat, think again as the sports brand is behind the logo.

Four years ago, the sports brand recreated McIlroy's washing machine target practice in an advertisement featuring the golfer and Tiger Woods.

Now Nike have taken it a step further by inserting a washing machine logo onto his polo shirt.

It's also not the first time they have tapped into the quirky logos for players' golfing attire during the Majors this year.

In April during a Masters press conference, Woods wore a similar logo t-shirt featuring his cartoon driver head cover called Frank.
