JUST 17 Northern Ireland parks are battling it out among 364 to be named the best in the UK as part of a celebration of "health and well being".

Voting opened to coincide with the little known `Have a Field Day' on Saturday July 6.

The annual celebration of parks and green spaces featured more than 250 community-led events with thousands of people having picnics with friends and neighbours among other outdoor activities.

Voters can chose from Co Antrim's offerings of Antrim Castle Gardens, Carnfunnock, Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park, Victoria, Stormont Estate and Larne Town Park.

Co Down is represented by Warrenpoint Municipal, Redburn Country, Ward, Castle, Dromore Town and Kilbroney Park and Armagh by Portadown Peoples, Lurgan, Edenvilla and Craigavon City Park.

Derry's sole representative is Portstewart Diversity Park.

Counties Tyrone and Fermanagh have both been overlooked.

The park with the most votes in each of Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England will be shortlisted with the UK's Best Park, 2019 announced in mid-September.

The Fields in Trust UK's Best Park 2019 will be an entirely public vote via www.fieldsintrust.org/best-park/northern-ireland.

Voting closes at noon on Monday August 19.

Fields in Trust's research `Revaluing Parks and Green Spaces' shows parks deliver more £34 billion direct health and wellbeing benefits to UK residents each year, with regular park users making fewer GP visits.
