THE funeral of a former SDLP councillor who died while on holiday in Ibiza is to take place in south Armagh next week.

Family, friends and political colleagues of Geraldine Donnelly will gather to say their final farewells in Crossmaglen on Wednesday.

Requiem Mass for the mother-of-three will be celebrated in St Patrick's Church.

Ms Donnelly is understood to have taken ill during her flight to the Balearic island on Friday night.

The 69-year-old from Crossmaglen, who was travelling with her husband Sean, daughter Karen, son-in-law Tony and four grandchildren, died on Saturday.

A councillor for 11 years, she was described as the "beating heart of the SDLP in Armagh" whose death has left a "huge void" within her family and community.

Ms Donnelly joined the former Newry and Mourne council in 2005 and was deputy mayor from 2011 to 2012. She retired from the council in 2016.

She also served on the board of the Newry and Mourne enterprise agency and worked with families of the Disappeared, relatives of murdered south Armagh man Paul Quinn and victims of the Glenanne Gang

Her funeral will take place at 11am with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Ms Donnelly is survived by her husband Sean, son Niall and daughters Sandra and Karen and family circle.
