A Co Antrim pilot has become the first person to fly around the world in an autogyro.

Norman Surplus (54), from Larne, completed his epic undertaking on Friday when he reached the United States.

The full journey took a total of nine years as difficulties over flight plans delayed the challenge.

Mr Surplus set out on the final leg of his round-the-world trip on Easter Monday, after finally getting permission to fly 5,000 miles west to east across Russia through seven different times zones.

He then flew on to the west coast of the US and landed at the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in the state of Oregon to officially complete his circumnavigation of the globe.

He had initially set off from his home town, flying to England, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Lithuania and then to Estonia before entering Russia.

During his adventure, Mr Surplus experienced bad weather, technical difficulties and at one point crashed into a lake in Thailand.

Speaking about his achievement, the cancer survivor said he was "relieved".

"It's a great feeling to have finished what I started right back in 2010 and a bit of aviation history I suppose," he said.
