INVESTIGATIVE journalists, Barry McCaffrey and Trevor Birney were the distinguished guests of the Irish President at the weekend.

The reporters behind the Loughinisland massacre documentary No Stone Unturned were hosted by President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina at Áras an Uachtaráin on Friday.

During the visit, Gerry Carson, chairman of the Belfast and District Branch of the National Union of Journalists, presented the President with a piece of Waterford Crystal in recognition of his support for journalists in the north.

Earlier this month it was confirmed that a police investigation into the Belfast-based journalists, who were arrested over confidential material they aired in the documentary, was dropped.

The two journalists have since reclaimed all the material seized during raids on their homes and offices last year.
