WITH just five weeks to go until the 148th Open Championship begins, golfing street art has appeared in Portrush.

A black and white image, appearing to show a young Rory McIlroy, was spotted in the Landsdowne Crescent area of the town yesterday.

The Bansky-type image has been drawn onto the side of the old lifeboat station building and shows the young Holywood golfer taking a shot.

It is believed that the artwork may be based on an image of McIlroy when he was aged just nine, as he practised on his local golf course ahead of the first major tournament of his career.

He went on to win the Doral Junior Publix, World Under Ten Championship held in Florida in 1998.

Many people took to social media to comment on the image of one of the top golfer with one even tweeting McIlroy a picture of it and asking: "Have you heard about the artwork that has appeared overnight in Portrush?".

And while many people have drawn similarities between the image and that of the work that world-renowned graffiti artist Bansky is renowned for, it is not believed to be the elusive artist’s creation.

There has been no post about the artwork on his official Instagram and the public consensus appears to believe the street art is not part of his latest collection.
