THE family of the late Martin McGuinness has donated £13,000 to the Western health trust "in appreciation" of the treatment he received at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry.

A total of £26,000 was raised following the 'Chieftans Walk' in the city in March, held to mark the second anniversary of the former Deputy First Minister's death.

The money was split between Altnagelvin's Intensive Care Unit and the Foyle Hospice.

Mr McGuinness's widow, Bernadette, and other family members made the cheque presentation to Altnagelvin staff members.

A trust spokeswoman said they gratefully acknowledged the "incredible donation".

Mr McGuinness died on March 21 2017 aged 66 from a rare heart condition.

This was the second year of the walk and it followed a different route - from Ebrington Square in the Waterside to the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.

Thousands of people turned out for the event in what is to be an annual fundraiser.
