A 31-YEAR-OLD man was being questioned last night about a string of hijackings in Co Down and Belfast.

The man was arrested on suspicion of hijacking and common assault following a hijacking spree over a one-and-a-half-hour period on Saturday.

At around 11am, three women were assaulted by two men travelling in a Volkswagen Golf on the Newcastle Road in Dundrum.

After the Golf was involved in a crash on the Old Ballynahinch Road in Lisburn, two men hijacked a Peugeot 208.

A short time later, police received reports of a crash and an attempted hijacking and hijacking on the Saintfield Road in Belfast.

A Renault Clio was then stolen from its owner on Purdysburn Road in the south of the city.

The car was later found in Beechmount Avenue in west Belfast shortly before 12.25pm.

A 19-year-old medical student told the BBC yesterday he was "ripped from his car" in the hijacking on Purdysburn Road.

Daniel Napier, from Co Down, was taking a friend for a drive when two hijackers ran towards his car.

"They reached in and ripped me out of the car. They pinned me up against the car," he said.

"I was in a vice-like grip and I felt under so much pressure."

Mr Napier said one of the men punched him in the face and threatened to shoot him if he did not hand over his keys and valuables.

"The keys fell out of my hand when he punched me in the face. My nose and lips were bleeding. I was physically stunned," he said.

Mr Napier said he lost his mobile phone, passport and football kit in the hijacking.
