A POLICE officer required hospital treatment after being "severely bitten".

The incident is understood to have happened early on Sunday on Rainey Street in Magherafelt after officers were flagged down by a taxi driver.

Posting on Magherfelt PSNI's Facebook page, an officer said the driver appealed for help because his passenger was "very drunk" and did not know where she lived.

Police spoke to the woman through the window and said she appeared to be half asleep.

They said they were then "met with an onslaught of obscenities" as the taxi door was kicked open.

"The subsequent actions of the individual in question left three officers injured with one being hospitalised after being severely bitten. The officer now has an agonising wait on blood test results to confirm whether or not they have not been infected with a virus," the Facebook post said.

The woman is due to appear in court.
