THE search is on for Northern Ireland's most spectacular and storied trees.

The Woodland Trust is urging tree lovers to "stump up" nominations for the north's 'Tree of the Year'.

Members of the public are encouraged to share the myths and memories of their best-loved tree, with the winning choice set to benefit from a tree care award of up to £1,000.

Last year's winner was a mighty redwood - also known as a giant sequoia - which proudly stands within the walled garden at Castlewellan Forest Park in Co Down.

More than 160 years old, it has nine trunks and is a firm favourite with young climbers.

Ian McCurley, director of the Woodland Trust in Northern Ireland, said they are on the look-out for a tree with a story.

"Tree of the Year brings a wonderful opportunity for individuals and entire communities to nominate and share their best-loved trees," he said.

"We're looking for a tree with a story, legend, historical significance, or one which is a local landmark.

"In other European countries, old trees are listed as natural monuments and receive the same level of support as listed buildings.

"Our ultimate aim is to draw attention to Northern Ireland's amazing trees, helping to secure the protection they deserve."
