Captured at Carlisle Circus in Belfast during last year's Twelfth of July parades, the judges said they "agreed that the expression on the child’s face draws you straight into the picture which is enhanced by a strong use of colour and composition".

In the politics category, Mal also won second place for his picture of the late Martin McGuinness' son Fiachra and grandson Dulta at the unveiling of the portrait of the former deputy First Minister at Parliament Buildings.

Judges said the image, entitled 'Three Generations', was a "beautifully composed picture (which) captures a touching moment".

Mal also was awarded second place in the picture story section with his 'Out of the Ashes' images documenting the Primark fire.

"A strong essay that covered the whole story of Primark fire over a period of time...the three key pictures were exceptionally strong," said the judges.

In awarding Mal the Photographer of the Year accolade, judges said they "agreed that Mal did not have a bad picture in it".
