Police have charged a 49-year-old man with attempted hijacking and attempted robbery.

The charges are in connection with an incident in the Ballymagroarty area of Derry early on Thursday.

At around 12.50am police received a report of a man entering the driver’s seat of a car containing a woman and two children. He attempted to drive the car away but was unable to do so. He then tried to take the woman’s handbag from the passenger seat. However, he fled the scene empty-handed. The woman and children were left unharmed.

The suspect was also charged with failing to provide a specimen, unfit through drink or drugs and possession of a class-B drug.

He is due to appear before Derry Magistrates Court on Friday.
