A LISBURN man appeared in court yesterday in connection with the road crash death of a west Belfast pensioner.

George McCaul (81) died after he was struck by a car as he tried to cross the road at Upper Lisburn Road last October.

The pensioner from Twinbrook was pushing a four-year-old child in a buggy when the crash happened around 3.50pm on October 21.

While the child sustained minor injuries, Mr McCaul passed away in hospital the following month.

Robert Thomas Devenney (38), from Front Road in Lisburn, appeared at Belfast Magistrates Court charged with causing the death of Mr McCaul by dangerous driving, and driving dangerously on the M1.

After the charges were read to Mr Devenney, he was asked if he understood them, to which he replied: "I do."

A police constable said he was aware of the circumstances of the case, and confirmed he believed he could connect Mr Devenney to the charges.

A defence solicitor told Deputy District Magistrate Peter Prenter they were awaiting forensic reports, which should be available in June.

Mr Prenter was also told Mr Devenney had a "full-time occupation" and after hearing there were "no issues" with him being granted continuing bail, the magistrate re-listed the case for eight weeks' time.

He told the accused to be back in court on June 19.
