A CAR was used to tear up a soccer pitch in a popular west Belfast park in the latest act of anti-social behaviour to blight the area.

It is believed the car was used to rally around the pitch at Falls Park causing serious damage before being torched in the early hours of Sunday.

Through its Facebook page Newhill Football Club, which uses the playing field, last night said they are “devastated.”

“As a community we are angry,” the club said.

“Our club volunteers spend hours upon hours of their free time coaching and educating young footballers.

“Our club and community revolve around this pitch.

“There are simply no words."

SDLP councillor Tim Attwood said: “It’s appalling that yet again some elements want to use the park for all the wrong reasons in terms of anti-social behaviour.

“These people need to wise up.”

A Belfast City Council spokesperson said: “The facilities at Falls Park are well used and enjoyed by the local community so it’s extremely disappointing to see them damaged in this way.”

Police say they received a report of a car on fire in Whiterock Close in west Belfast shortly after 12.45am on Sunday.

It is understood the incident may be linked to an earlier attack on police in the area by youths throwing stones and paint bombs after 9pm on Saturday.
