Forensics officers on a boat in Portavogie harbour after human remains were found at sea

A Co Down harbour has been sealed off after human remains were found at sea this morning.

It is understood the remains were discovered by a fishing boat.

Portavogie harbour was cordoned off following the discovery.

A PSNI spokesman said: "Police are currently at Portavogie Harbour following the discovery of human remains at sea.

"Efforts are underway to establish the identity and a cause of death for the deceased.

"There are no further details at present."

Police are investigating after human remains were discovered in the Irish Sea 

SDLP councillor Joe Boyle said he was saddened by the discovery.

"This is extremely devastating news for the local community in Portavogie and indeed the families and friends set to get horrific news once the identity is confirmed," he said.

"I would ask people to avoid the area to allow the PSNI space and time to carry out their investigation.

"I would appeal to anyone with information to contact the PSNI at this time."
