One of Ireland's most popular hotels has been sold to an investment fund after the founding owners announced they want to spend more time with each other and their family.

Deirdre McGlone and Marc Gysling developed the four-star Harvey's Point hotel at Lough Eske in County Donegal into one of the most successful tourist destinations in Ireland.

Four miles from Donegal Town, the 64-bedroom hotel sits on the shore of scenic Lough Eske at the foot of the Blue Stack mountains. The couple have run the hotel since it was first opened 30 years ago. Harvey's Point has been named the best hotel in Ireland by TripAdvisor six times in the last seven years.

Ms McGlone said the couple felt it was time to move on.

She said: “This is a life-changing, lifestyle choice for us as a family. Marc and I want to spend more time with each other and with our three teenage children. Life is for living.

“We have spent an immensely enjoyable 30 years at Harvey's Point and it has been an amazing journey. 2019 is a milestone year for the hotel and a year of celebrations is planned. However, the time has come for someone else to write the next chapter in the Harvey's Point story.”

The new owners, Davy Real Estate, which bought the hotel for an undisclosed sum, say they intend investing in its development. Mr Gysling said the new owners were highly experienced in the international luxury hotel and travel market.
