A PERSON was taken to hospital last night following a road crash involving a motorcyclist in east Belfast.

Sydenham Road was closed in both directions as emergency services attended the scene shortly before 5pm.

A lorry and a motorcycle were involved in the collision, which happened close to the Porsche garage.

It is understood that the motorbike came to stop close to a car.

A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it received a 999 call at 4.58pm.

"NIAS despatched a Rapid Response Paramedic, an emergency crew and a doctor to the scene," he said.

"The Charity Air Ambulance, with a HEMS team on board was also tasked to the incident.

"After assessment and initial treatment at the scene, the patient was transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital."

There were long knock-on delays on the Sydenham Bypass, the M3 and Airport Road following the crash. The route was opened around two hours later.
