PSNI chief constable George Hamilton and Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald are set to meet in Washington DC this week following communication between their offices.

Mr Hamilton accused Ms McDonald of "an act of poor leadership" last month for saying she could not think of any current PSNI officer who should replace him when he retires in June.

The Sinn Féin leader made the comments about the chief constable recruitment process last month following a meeting with senior officers to discuss the controversy over Police Ombudsman legacy files.

She has refused to apologise, but the BBC reported yesterday the chief constable said he "hoped" a meeting will take place in coming days while both are in the US ahead of St Patrick's Day.

Ms McDonald and her deputy Michelle O'Neill are expected to arrive in Washington today, along with DUP leader Arlene Foster and UUP leader Robin Swann.
