The DUP has been the subject of online jokes after it launched its new elections slogan ‘Strength to Deliver’ - which has the initials STD.

The snappy new slogan was revealed by the party ahead of May’s local elections as members met in Co Tyrone for their spring conference.

However, after the slogan appeared online it was pointed out that the initials STD also stand for ‘Sexually Transmitted Disease’.

On its Twitter feed the party said: “Our slogan for the election will be three words which sum up the party and our team.

“It will be ‘Strength to Deliver’.”

The tweet was accompanied by a picture of the party’s leader Arlene Foster.

The post was later inundated with hundreds of replies as opponents got in on the joke.

The PR blunder has prompted banter from rival politicians.

UUP MLA Doug Beattie provided a link to the DUP page and Tweeted: “Strength to deliver or STD - do you have an STD - the DUP have.”

On her own Twitter feed Arlene Foster said her party “has the strength to deliver for the people of NI through our strong team of elected reps”, and included the hashtag “#StrengthToDeliver”.
