Father Ted star Ardal O'Hanlon will star in the upcoming second series of Derry Girls.

The Irish comedian will play `Eamonn', an "awkward, middle-aged mummy’s boy of the Quinn/McCool extended family".

Cast member Saoirse-Monica Jackson, who plays Erin on the show, revealed the news to the Radio Times.

"Ardal O’Hanlon joins our family this year, which is brilliant," she said.

Cast mate Nicola Coughlan, who plays Claire, added that Eamonn is "a real Irish stereotype".

"I think it’s something that everybody will recognise, and he completely gets it so on the money," she said.

"It was really surreal, just looking at him, because he’s such an iconic figure in Ireland, and he’s such a lovely man. He’s so good in it."

The actress later tweeted a link to the story and said she's "buzzing" about him joining the cast.

Best known for playing Fr Dougal Maguire in Father Ted, Ardal O'Hanlon is also currently starring in the news series of BBC's Death in Paradise.

The second series of Derry Girls is scheduled to be back on Channel 4 next month.

It is expected that several well-known Derry locations will feature in the series, including Free Derry Wall, which was decked out in Christmas decorations during filming for the series.
