FRIENDS and family of a former university communications director will today gather to pay their final respects.

Kevin Mulhern, who was in his early fifties, died suddenly at his home in Crossgar, Co Down, on Monday.

He was head of Communications and External Affairs at Queen's University Belfast for almost 12 years and more recently worked for the Northern Ireland Social Care Council.

The father-of-two was a prominent member of the parents and friends association of St Patrick's Grammar School in Downpatrick. He has been remembered as a man who "gave his time and expertise so generously to school activities, always with a smile and wonderful sense of humour".

The Northern Ireland Social Care Council said it "lost a valued colleague and good friend".

"Kevin's knowledge, dedication and commitment to the importance of good communication has left a lasting legacy with us and one that will live long in his memory," the council said.

His funeral will leave his home at 11.30am today for noon Requiem Mass in the Church of the Immaculate Conception and St Joseph Crossgar. A private burial will take place afterwards.
