A 19-year-old man last night remained in police custody after two men suffered stab wounds in an attack in Co Down.

Police said the two victims were targeted on the Bryansford Road in Newcastle shortly before midnight on Friday.

It is understood a fight may have broke out near a bar in the town.

The two victims suffered wounds and were taken to hospital for treatment. However, their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A 20-year-old man was arrested by police on suspicion of attempted murder.

He was subsequently released on bail pending further enquiries.

Police said a 19-year-old man was also arrested yesterday in connection with the stabbing. He remained in police custody last night.

Police have appealed for "anyone with information or who may have dash-cam footage regarding this crime" to contact them.

SDLP councillor Laura Devlin last night condemned the attack.

"Our thoughts are with the victim and I hope that he makes a good recovery," she said.

"This type of behaviour is totally unacceptable, this is not what we expect in Newcastle.

"I would appeal to anyone who has information to contact the police."
