Nostalgic, coming of age comedy Derry Girls has gone global after becoming available to Netflix subscribers around the world.

The show, which tells the story of a group of school friends growing up in Derry during the 1990s, reached an audience of 2.5 million when it was broadcast earlier this year.

It will now be available on Netflix US, making it available to 100 million viewers.

The comedy broke all Channel Four records for a new series when it was broadcast earlier this year and the channel quickly commissioned a second series.

Written by Lisa McGee, Derry Girls reached 54 per cent of the Northern Ireland TV audience, including 65 per cent of 16-34 year olds.

While little has been given away about series two, Ms Gee has indicated the characters will get involved with the Christmas visit to the city by then US president Bill Clinton in 1995, with the cast seen filming scenes in Derry recently waving American flags.

Nicola Coughlan, who plays Clare Devlin in the series, commenting on Twitter said; "DerryGirls goes to @netflix Worldwide and I am a nervous ball of excitement, but also terrified, but also elated, all the feelings".
