Man charged with alleged rape

A man has been returned for trial to Derry Crown Court on a series of charges including rape.

Paul Mulhern (50) of Circular Road in Derry appeared at a preliminary enquiry at the local Magistrate's Court.

He was charged with the rape of a woman between March 14 and March 15, 2016.

He also faced a charged of causing the same female to engage in a sexual act, falsely imprisoning her, assaulting her, occasioning actual bodily harm and three counts of common assault on the same dates.

He was further charged with threatening to kill the woman's children and the theft of a laptop and mobile phone, again on the same dates.

It was accepted there was a case to answer and there were no contrary submissions.

Mulhern said he did not wish to call any witnesses or make any statement at this stage.

He was returned to the local Crown Court sitting on January 17 and released on his own bail.
