A Co Tyrone-based company is to stand trial next year on charges including corporate manslaughter following the death of an employee in a workplace accident.

Members of Steven McTeague's family were present for a short hearing at Dungannon Crown Court yesterday.

Appearing on behalf of Terex GB was company representative Paul O’Donnell, with an address given as Coalisland Road, Dungannon.

It is alleged the company, which manufactures machinery for stone crushing and screening, caused the death of its employee on July 14 2016 in a way amounting to a gross breach of a relevant duty of care.

Mr McTeague (51), a married father of two sons, was employed at its Killyclogher site near Omagh.

Originally from Omagh, but living in Loughmacrory, he was a keen photographer and golfer.

It is further alleged Terex GB failed to ensure the health, safety and welfare at work of all employees, failed to ensure persons not in employment but affected were not exposed to health and safety risks, and failed to make suitable and sufficient risk assessments for health and safety of employees.

As each charge was put to Mr O’Donnell, he replied: “On behalf of the company, we plead not guilty.”

Judge Stephen Fowler said a trial will take place in May 2019.

He added: “I make it abundantly clear all material including expert reports are to be ready in advance of trial to ensure the date is met.”

The case will be reviewed in February.
