POLICE have said nothing untoward was found during searches following a weekend security alert in west Belfast.

The alert in the Old Golf Course Road and Creightons Road area began on Saturday morning after police received a report that a device had been left nearby.

The roads were reopened after the security operation ended yesterday afternoon.

PSNI chief inspector Helen Garrett said "nothing untoward was found".

"I understand these road closures caused significant disruption in the area, especially in the run-up to Christmas, and I want to thank the public for their patience and understanding during this time," she said.

"The safety of the community is of paramount importance and, as we work to keep people safe, we will not take any risks."

She urged anyone who comes across anything suspicious, or anyone with information about the incident, to contact police.
