THE murder of father-of-nine, Eddie Meenan was a "crime beyond words", mourners at his funeral have been told.

Mr Meenan from Little Diamond in Derry's Bogside died in an attack close to his home early on Sunday November 25.

The 52-year-old's body was found with what police described as "significant" injuries to his head and body close to the city's St Eugene's Cathedral.

Three men, aged 19, 26 and 31, have been charged with his murder.

Priest Fr Patrick Lagan said Mr Meenan was a "character" who brought joy to all who knew him and a loving brother and friend who had an easy approach to live and who lived a simple and straightforward life.

Fr Lagan told mourners Mr Meenan had a great sense of humour which helped him face the burdens and cares of life.

Friends and family were reminded how he started every day with a smile and a greeting for his mother, Nancy.

A large crowd watched on as a Tricolour was placed on Mr Meenan's coffin as it was brought from St Eugene's. There were emotional scenes as many of the dead man's family and friends embraced and wept openly.

Fr Lagan said Mr Meenan was a very capable man whose death shocked the community.

"This senseless taking of an innocent human life is a crime beyond words, a pain which no family should ever have to carry."

Following Requiem Mass, Mr Meenan was laid to rest at Derry city cemetery.
