A SPECIAL commemoration to mark the 35th anniversary of the killing of a Queen's University law lecturer by the IRA took place yesterday.

Edgar Graham (29,) who was also an Ulster Unionist politician and regarded as a rising star in the party, was shot dead outside the university library on December 7, 1983.

Ulster unionist party leader Robin Swann laid a wreath during the ceremony, which was organised by students.

"There is no doubt that his talent and ability had already marked him out as a future leader of the party and that Northern Ireland could have been a very different place had he been allowed to live," Mr Swann said.

"I would like to praise the Queen’s students who organised what was a very thoughtful and dignified commemoration...and my thoughts are with Edgar’s family at this time."
