Two women and a man arrested in connection with an alleged hammer attack in north Belfast have been released on police bail.

The women, aged 25 and 31, and the 26-year-old male were arrested following an incident at a flat in Oisin House in the New Lodge area that was reported to police at around 8pm on Wednesday.

A PSNI spokesperson said a woman opened the door to her flat and a man and woman forced their way in and assaulted her with a hammer. A male resident attempted to intervene and was also assaulted, the spokesperson added.

The female victim was later treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries, while police attending the scene of the incident were attacked by a gang of youths throwing stones. No officers were injured, but a police Landrover suffered minor damage.

The trio arrested following the incident have been released on bail pending further enquiries.
