Tributes paid following death of Donegal fiddle player

The funeral takes place later today of musician, Vincent Campbell who has been described as one of the leaders in the rebirth of Irish traditional fiddle music.

From Glenties, Mr Campbell was a member of a famous musical family. With his brother, Jimmy and nephew, Peter the family was to the fore in handing on the distinctive tradition of County Donegal fiddle music.

After learning to play fiddle at home, Mr Campbell came under the influence of legendary traditional musicians, Mickey and John Doherty. He went on to play with some of the best-known figures in traditional and Irish music, including the late Ronnie Drew (Dubliners) and John and James Kelly. Mr Cambpell was known for the intricacy of his style and for his vast repertoire of tunes.

He was credited by many for handing on the traditions of older generations to younger musicians. Mr Campbell will be buried in Glenties’ cemetery following Requiem Mass (2pm) at St Connell’s Church.
