THE events that shaped Ireland 100 years ago will be put under the microscope at a special talk in south Derry.

Historian and Irish News contributor Dr Éamon Phoenix will deliver his analysis of events a century ago at the event in Maghera tomorrow.

The talk, which is themed 'Ireland in Transition 1918-19: From the Conscription Crisis to the the 1918 General Election and the First Dáil', has been organised by the County Derry Centenaries Group.

South Derry is steeped in the politics of the past and and it is expected Dr Phoenix will touch on matters of local interest as well as discussing characters and events from seminal moments of Irish history in the early 20th century.

Liam Duggan from the County Derry Centenaries Group said: "As we approach the centenary of the 1918 General Election which led to the formation of the First Dáil, our event gives us an opportunity to engage with a broad spectrum of local opinion and differing political perspectives while exploring the complexity of our shared history".

The free event takes place at The Great Hall at Walsh's Hotel, Maghera at 8pm.
