Winning paintings by young artists go on display at Ulster Museum

WINNING paintings by 14 Northern Ireland schoolchildren have gone on display in the Ulster Museum.

They are among 126 artworks chosen from across Ireland in the 64th Texaco Children's Art Competition. The exhibition was opened yesterday by president of the Royal Ulster Academy of Arts Betty Brown.

Top prizes went to Sophie Ward (13) from St Paul's High School in Newry, who took second prize in the 12-13 age category for her work entitled 'Eye Spy'.

Justin Cole (15), a pupil at Dunclug College, Ballymena, won second prize in the 14-15 age category for his self-portrait.

Winners of the special merit awards ranged in age from six to 17.

The exhibition runs until January 6 and is open to the public from 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Sunday. Admission is free.
