A CHARITY day at a Belfast golf club has raised more than £7,000 for the NI Children’s Hospice as well as increasing awareness of recycling.

This was the fourth annual event organised by Fortwilliam Golf Club and brings the total raised for the hospice to more than £24,000.

Almost 40 four-balls teed up, while members who were unable to compete made cash donations.

The golfers were provided with 200 reusable water bottles by NI Water to encourage them to top up from the club’s refill points around the course.

A spokesperson for NI Water said: "If everyone refills a reusable bottle from the tap, it potentially means there’s one less bottle of plastic potentially ending up in our seas."

Event organiser Ivan McMichael, a past captain of the golf club, thanked NI Water for their support over the last four years as well as principal sponsors, Johnsons Solicitors, who were supported by business owners in the north Belfast area.

Catherine O’Hara, NI Children’s Hospice regional fundraising officer, said the kindness and generosity of those who organised and supported the event "allows the hospice to provide loving care to children and young people with life-limiting illnesses".

The 2019 charity day will take place on Friday, August 30.
