TWO men have been arrested after a group of people dressed as Ku Klux Klan members in Newtownards, Co Down.

The men, aged 33 and 36, were arrested as part of an investigation into a hate crime after an incident on October 27 in which a group of people posed outside an Islamic prayer house wearing KKK costumes.

The 33-year-old was arrested on suspicion of displaying written material to stir up hatred or arouse fear, and on suspicion of possession of a Class C controlled drug while the second man was arrested on suspicion of displaying written material to stir up hatred or arouse fear. 

PSNI Superintendent Brian Kee said police had searched premises in the town this morning and seized "a number of items".

Both men have been released on bail pending further enquiries.

The KKK was a group based in the south of the US which was responsible for lynchings and mob attacks on black people.
