THE funeral was held yesterday of a grandfather who died suddenly amid initial reports of a fall from a house in Co Tyrone.

John Forrest (65), from Moneymore in Co Derry, died on Monday while clearing guttering on a house at Drum Road outside Cookstown.

It was first thought he had fallen from the roof, but his family said the results of a post-mortem examination were not consistent with this.

Mr Forrest, a grandfather-of-five, had been working by himself with secured ladders on the property when its owners returned to find him on the ground.

Ambulance crews said they were called at 8.44am "following reports that a male had fallen from a height".

Police attended the scene, but said the death is not being treated as suspicious.

The Health and Safety Executive said it was making enquiries into the circumstances.

An initial funeral notice had described Mr Forrest as having died "as the result of a tragic accident".

However, his eldest daughter Kyra Jones (41) told the Belfast Telegraph: "I don't think we will ever truly know what happened."

She said the post-mortem results say "that the cause of death is undetermined".

"There is a history in his family of healthy men who went out to work and just died," she said.

Mr Forrest, a born again Christian, was originally from Tullyhogue and had recently retired as a BT engineer.

Ms Jones fondly described him as a "really hard-working family man, very proud, who always helped others".

Mr Forrest is survived by his wife Pamela and three children Kyra, Philip and Karyn.

His funeral service was held at Donaghey Congregational Church at 1pm followed by burial in the adjoining churchyard.
