A Co Down man has appeared in court accused of raping a woman.

Standing in the dock of Newtownards Magistrates Court today, 20-year-old Robert James Hindes confirmed he understood the charge.

From Regency Park in Ards, he is accused of raping a female on March 4 this year. No facts giving rise to the charge were opened in court.

Applying for an eight week adjournment, Hindes' defence solicitor said the case was at an early stage and there was a lot of material outstanding.

Freeing Hindes on his own bail, District Judge Mark Hamill listed the case on December 19.

Hindes is to have no contact with either the alleged victim or prosecution witnesses and was barred from having unsupervised contact with any female under 16-years-old.
