A MAN has been stabbed in the head and leg and a woman punched in the face in an attempted street robbery in south Belfast.

It happened in the early hours of this morning on Haywood Avenue off Ormeau Road.

The man was stabbed in the head and leg, police confirmed.

Police said the victims of the attack were walking shortly before 1.30am when they were approached by two men wearing dark clothing who asked for money and cigarettes.

"When told they did not have any, the male received stab wounds both to his upper leg and head and the female was punched in the face. The male and female were both taken to hospital and treated for their injuries," police said.

“Both offenders made off from the scene emptied handed, but it is unclear in what direction they made off towards."
