A NORTH Belfast man who has been 'at large' since the summer appeared in court today following his arrest on a separate matter.

Ashley Russell was refused bail at Belfast Crown Court after it was claimed he "committed further offences" while being sought under a warrant.

The 27-year old, from Seaview Close, is awaiting sentence for two burglaries he confessed to carrying out in 2015 and 2016.

Russell appeared before Judge Patricia Smyth following his arrest on Botanic Avenue on October 27. Police were called to the area concerning an incident involving two men at a shop.

When officers arrived, one recognised Russell, and when asked his details, Russell gave a false name. The court heard that when the PSNI database was checked, it emerged Russell was wanted in relation to an "outstanding matter" and that two bench warrants had been issued.

A crown barrister said that during the arrest last Friday, Russell became obstructive and began shouting "I'm not Ashley." He was told to calm down or CS spray would be used.

A bench had been issued at Newry Crown Court in August for failing to appear, and he was at large since.

Judge Smyth was told Russell admitted to two break-ins at properties in Belfast, which were being dealt with at Newry Crown Court.

When he appeared at court for his arraignment, Russell pleaded guilty but warrants were subsequently issued after he failed to appear again.

Judge Smyth refused bail and remanded Russell into custody.
