POLICE investigating a paramilitary style attack in Derry have arrested a 42-year-old man.

The man was arrested in the Springtown area yesterday on suspicion of carrying out a paramilitary style attack in the city on October 5. He was taken to Musgrave Serious Crime Suite for questioning. Mobile phones and computers were also seized.

A police spokesman said the PSNI was committed to tackling all types of violence linked to paramilitaries "and this arrest comes after a vicious paramilitary style attack on a man earlier this month".

"Paramilitaries are a blight on society. Despite their claims that they are protecting their communities, they only seek to exert their control for their own selfish gains. Those who are involved in this type of criminality do not represent the interests of the community," he added.

"We are committed to keeping people safe and will continue to work in partnership with local agencies, residents and community representatives to prevent and detect crime."
