A woman who attacked a policeman after she was found drunk and barefoot on a south Belfast street has received a four-month suspended jail sentence.

Belfast Magistrates' Court heard Leah Clarkin kicked the officer amid warnings about the verbal abuse she was directing at him.

A defence lawyer described the 23-year-old's actions last month as "disgraceful".

Clarkin, of Conway Street in the west of the city, admitted disorderly behaviour, assault on police and resisting arrest.

A prosecution lawyer said she was found drunk, barefoot and wearing wet clothes at Abercorn Street on August 2.

She was verbally abusive and had to be restrained amid concerns she would run on to the road.

Despite being warned, she continued with her behaviour and kicked the constable on the leg, the court was told.

During the journey into custody Clarkin kicked out again, according to the prosecution,

Michael Boyd, defending, acknowledged: "This was disgraceful behaviour, obviously".

He said his client remembers little about the incident because she had been abusing drink and drugs.

The barrister said she has since found found stability in her life and is now pregnant.

Imposing a total of four months' imprisonment for the offences, District Judge Fiona Bagnall suspended the term for a year.
