PRO-Palestinian campaigners have criticised an SDLP councillor who met Israeli officials.

Details of the meeting were confirmed by mediation group Forward Thinking which brought a delegation to Ireland earlier this month.

It is understood Belfast city councillor Donal Lyons attended the meeting.

According to the group the “political delegation” included ministerial chiefs of staff, political advisers leaders and academics.

The delegation met with nationalist and unionist figures involved in the peace process.

Traditionally nationalists been sympathetic to the Palestinian cause and members of the SDLP have supported the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, which encourages the international community to turn its back on Israel because of its treatment of Palestinians.

Palestinian campaigner Fra Hughes said: “Anybody who is involved in talks with anybody connected with the Israeli government is flying in the face of the call by Palestinian society for boycott, divestment and sanctions.”

A spokeswoman for the SDLP last night said: “We will never stop engaging with delegations from Israel/Palestine and we will never stop defending the Palestinian cause.”

In 2016 it emerged that Sinn Féin had met with members of the right wing Likud party in a meeting also arranged by Forward Thinking.
