A 23-year-old man has been released on bail after a man was found with a gunshot wound in north Belfast.

He had been detained by police on Sunday on suspicion of attempted murder after a 24-year-old man, named locally as Richard 'Ricky' Mailey, suffered facial injuries and a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Mr Mailey was found bleeding near the Grainne House flats complex in the New Lodge Road area.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital, where he is in a stable condition.

Police said they received reports that a shot had been fired on Saturday at around 1.30am and added that they were not treating it as a paramilitary-style attack.

A PSNI spokesman said the man arrested had been released on bail pending further police enquiries.
