A SECURITY alert on the outskirts of west Belfast has been declared a hoax.

Police launched an operation after a report that a device has been left close to a bus stop in the McKinstry road area of Twinbrook.

A PSNI spokesman said “an item was examined and was declared a hoax”.

Meanwhile, a search was also carried out in the Pantridge Road area of Poleglass today after reports that a device had been left in the district shortly after 6pm on Saturday.

Police say nothing was found.

Chief Inspector Gavin Kirkpatrick said: "The safety of the community is of paramount importance and we will not take any risks, however, I want to thank the local community for their patience and understanding during this operation.

"I want to take this opportunity to re-emphasise to the local community and people travelling through it if anyone comes across anything suspicious, they should contact police immediately."

A device reported to have been left in the Andersonstown Road area of west Belfast on Saturday described by police as was "an elaborate hoax".

SDLP councillor Brian Heading last night said those behind the alerts need to remember the impact on local people.
