A HANDGUN was found in a bin in an alleyway in Newry.

The firearm was discovered at John Martin Street at about 6.30pm on Tuesday and was sent for forensic examination.

PSNI detective sergeant James Johnston said: "It is reckless in the extreme to leave such an item in a residential area which is frequented by all members of the public, including children."

He appealed for anyone with information about the find to contact police in Newry on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
