Derry police station sealed off during overnight security alert

THE area around Strand Road PSNI station in Derry was sealed off last night during a security alert.

Police placed cordons shortly before 9pm at Lawrence Hill roundabout and at Clarendon Street, diverting city centre traffic through Northland Road and Queen's Quay.

However, the alert ended this morning after no suspect devices were found.

Chief Inspector Alan Hutton said the alert began "as a result of information received".

"Following checks of the area, however, nothing untoward was found," he said.

“All roads have now reopened.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank the public for their patience and co-operation while the area was checked, especially those who were inconvenienced.

“Keeping people safe is our priority and I would ask the public to remain vigilant. If anyone notices any suspicious objects they should not touch them, but contact police immediately.”
