A FISHERMAN from Northern Ireland has been reported missing and is feared drowned in Sweden.

The 65-year-old was fishing at a river in the north of the Scandinavian country when it is believed he fell into the water.

Police in Sweden have been leading the search, and his family were receiving consular support from the foreign affairs offices in Dublin and London.

The missing man is a financial adviser from Co Down and had been on a fishing holiday with friends, it was reported.

Emergency crews began searching in the Pajala area after the alarm was raised on Monday morning.

Rescue teams including a police helicopter have been involved in the search, according to the Swedish National Police Board.

The case was later handed over to police. They said the missing person is a 65-year-old man from Northern Ireland, and that his relatives have been informed.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in the Republic said: "The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade cannot comment on individual consular cases, but we can confirm that consular assistance is being provided to the family of an individual in Sweden."

A British Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: "We are supporting the family of a British-Irish dual national who has been reported missing in Sweden.

"We are in contact with the local police who are leading the search, and the Irish Embassy in Sweden."
